Alex, what is the default encoding for your project files?
You can check it in the Settings->File/Directory Options.

Ok, this encoding is for property files. What is the default? (In a screenshot you can see where to find the setting)

I still can't work on IDEA 8.1 EAP build 9540.
The local history become so useless if the sources contains any Chinese characters.
It really bothered me for a long time.

are the Chinese characters are shown corrupted after all changes, or after some specific ones only? I've tried the GTK locale on my Linux box, and the local history shows the symbols correctly for me always, except the changes like file rename/move.

Another question: do you use some version control in your project?

The Chinese characters are shown corrupted after all changes, like Project open, Run server, Rebuild project.
I do not use any VCS besides local history.

9590: reproduced. It seems the bug really happens on Mac, but does not on Windows, with the same conditions.
Tested on both OS with a IDE default encoding = UTF-8, project encoding = GBK (no more specific encoding settings), with the single java source file with Chinese chars in a comment. On Windows no false changes are shown, on Mac they are.
